History of Florida Keys
These islands were inhabited by Native Americans in the early days. Later on in the Juan Ponce de León chartered these islands in 1513. It was named Los Martires or The Martyrs because these islands looked like suffering man. The word “Key” came from the Spanish word “Cayo” which means a small island. These islands were ideally located for trade with the Bahamas and Cuba.
The construction of the overseas railway in 1910 made these islands accessible by land. Prior to the railroads, which were built by Henry Morrison Flagler, these islands were only accessible through water.
The Seven Mile Bridge
The Seven Miles Bridge was one of the longest bridges in the islands, connecting Knight’s Key and Little Duck Key. Currently, no motor vehicles are allowed on the bridge, but it is open to pedestrians and bicycles.
Overseas Highway US 1
After the Labor Day hurricane of 1935, which destroyed the Key Railroad, the US 1 Highway was built replacing the railway tracks to connect the Florida Key islands to the mainland Florida. This is the only route that runs from Miami to the Keys.

Weather and Climate at Florida Keys
The weather in Florida Keys always stays moderate. It never gets too hot. The temperature remains between 65 degrees to 80 degrees all year round with very little difference in winter and summer temperatures. The average rainfall is highest in June (6 inches) and lowest in March (1.7 to inches).
